Indiana Statewide COVID-19 Statistics

Watchdog Indiana Home Page Watchdog Lebanon Home Page

This webpage is updated daily to record and evaluate some of the statewide 2020 and 2021 COVID-19 pandemic data that is particularly relevant to the health of Hoosiers age 70 and older

Hoosiers age 70 and older must now take special precautions wear N95 or cloth face masks, maintain 6-feet social distancing (and avoid hand-shaking), and frequently sanitize their hands whenever they might be in contact with unvaccinated persons. Older Hoosiers can likely safely resume normal activities if they are fully vaccinated and at least 70 percent of all Indiana residents are fully vaccinated..

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WHILE THE OVERALL PROBABILITY OF BECOMING INFECTED OUTSIDE A LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY IS LOW WHEN PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN, HOOSIERS AGE 70 AND OLDER BECAUSE OF THE HIGH POSSIBILITY OF SERIOUS ILLNESS AND DEATH FROM A COVID-19 INFECTION MUST REMAIN VIGILANT UNTIL THEY AND AT LEAST 70 PERCENT OF ALL INDIANA RESIDENTS ARE FULLY VACCINATED.

COVID-19 Infection Probability Descriptions. The descriptions listed next are assigned by the author of this web page. The descriptions denote his opinions regarding how specific data items should be interpreted. The interpretations indicate whether or not the probability of harmful COVID-19 infection outcomes is increased or lessened.
Alarming the probability of harmful infection outcomes is too high
Disturbing the probability of harmful infection outcomes is higher than it should be
Encouraging the probability of harmful infection outcomes is acceptably lessened

1. VACCINATION USE

1.1. The goal of state health officials is for at least 70 percent of the total Indiana population to be fully vaccinated.

1.2. As of April 9 1,352,363 Hoosiers were fully vaccinated which was 20.0 percent of the total 6,754,953 state population.

1.3 As of April 9, 18.7 percent of the total United States population was fully vaccinated

1.4. It is encouraging that President Joe Biden announced on April 6, 2021, that there will be a sufficient supply of vaccines by April 19, 2021, to vaccinate all Americans 18 and older nationwide against COVID-19. Indiana expects a large increase in vaccine supply beginning the last week in March 2021, and state health officials hope every Hoosier age 16 and older who wants to get vaccinated will have had the opportunity to do so by June 2021. It was reported on March 27, 2021, that the Boone County Health Department's vaccine allotment has increased from 1,300 to 2,200 shots per week.

1.5. It is encouraging that as of April 1, 2021, there were more than 500 vaccine sites across Indiana where all Hoosiers age 16 and older could get free vaccine shots. The Homebound Hoosiers vaccination program also provides free vaccinations by sending emergency workers to the homes of eligible Hoosiers statewide who are unable to leave their homes, whether because they are too sick, disabled, unable to make it to a vaccination site and don't have family and friends to help them register. The state also had 17 additional high-volume mass immunization clinics across the state. Fifteen Hoosier college campuses will start vaccinating their students (including out-of-state students).

1.6. It is encouraging that as of March 31 all Indiana residents age 16 and older were eligible to schedule an appointment for a free vaccination by visiting the https://ourshot.in.gov website, calling 211 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, calling one of Indiana's Area Agencies on Aging, contacting AARP Indiana, or visiting 70 libraries around the state. Persons who have recently received another vaccine, such as the flu or shingles vaccine, must wait at lest 14 days before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. About 76.7 percent (or 5,181,049) of the total 6,754,953 Indiana population is age 18 and older meaning that 91.3 percent of Hoosiers age 18 and older must be fully vaccinated to reach the goal of 70 percent full vaccination for the total Indiana population.

1.7. It is encouraging that Boone County has seven vaccine sites: (a) the Farm Bureau Community Building at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds, (b) the Boone Village Kroger Pharmacy, (c) the North Lebanon Street Kroger Pharmacy, (d) the North Michigan Road Kroger Pharmacy, (e) the Whitestown Parkway Meijer Pharmacy, (f) the North Lebanon Street Walmart Pharmacy, and (g) the Witham Health Pavilion Pharmacy in Lebanon. The Boone County Health Department has partnered with Witham EMS to administer homebound vaccines.

1.8. It is encouraging that people who have developed a natural immune response after being infected with the COVID-19 virus help reach a critical mass of herd immunity (as long as they are not confronted with a variant to which they are not immune). Antibody tests indicate that the number of persons with natural immunity is close to three times higher than reported cases. However, it is not known how long natural immunity is effective thus making it very important for a high percentage of the total population to be vaccinated (including those who have already been infected with the COVID-19 virus).

2. STATEWIDE COVID-19 TESTING

2.1. As of March 2021, Indiana has the capacity to test 50,000 Hoosiers a day for COVID-19.

2.2. The Harvard Global Health Institute concluded months ago that about 21,500 Hoosiers should be tested for COVID-19 every day to effectively identify the virus spread. A daily testing level below 21,500 would mean that Hoosiers have an increased susceptibility to COVID-19 infections from those who are unknowingly infected.

2.3. It is encouraging that the 38,523 new tests reported on April 9 was much more than the 21,500 new tests target needed to effectively identify where the virus is spreading.

2.4. It is encouraging that the total number of individual Hoosiers who have been tested at least once as of April 9 is 3,294,837, which is 48.8 percent of the 6,754,953 total population.

2.5. There are 39 testing sites that OptumServe operates for the Indiana State Department of Health and 95 testing sites run by local health departments. Each site has the capacity to run between 100 to 200 tests per day. A rapid testing site, which operates six days a week, is in a building near the Boone County Jail. The state also has a lab testing network to get test results back as quickly as possible. All who or work in Indiana can get a free COVID-19 test. Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that anyone who has been within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes should get a test due to the significance of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission. Visit https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2524.htm to make a test appointment.

2.6. Each K-12 school in the state will start receiving 120 rapid antigen tests on February 8, and will be able to order more. These tests are intended for use on symptomatic students and teachers. Schools able to administer the rapid antigen tests can more quickly identify positive COVID-19 individuals who need a follow-up PCR test, thereby helping reduce the virus spread.

2.7. It is encouraging that persons will soon be able to buy rapid coronavirus tests at chain pharmacies and grocers without a prescription. Frequent rapid testing will be important as more is learned about how long immunity lasts from the vaccines and how variants evolve.

3. STATEWIDE CONTACT TRACING
In addition to sufficient statewide COVID-19 testing, contact tracing will be particularly important for the health of Hoosiers age 70 and older. The state signed a $43 million contract with Maximus in April 2020 to hire at least 500 people in a call center to contact those persons who have tested positive and their close contacts. Indiana University received $10.5 million from the City of Indianapolis to hire 300 contact tracers to assist the Marion County Health Department. Other county and city health departments, together with some colleges, have an additional 400 contact tracers. It is discouraging that state health officials reported December 2 that contact tracers were only trying to phone COVID-19-positive patients, who often will not answer the phone or decline to answer questions. The patients themselves were supposed to notify their close contacts who were around them 48 hours prior to symptoms showing, while contact tracers also attempted to text these close contacts.

4. STATEWIDE HOSPITAL CAPACITY
NOTE: See the 12.1. Total Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients list at the bottom of this web page.

4.1. The availability of sufficient intensive care unit hospital beds and hospital staff throughout Indiana are important factors in helping control the COVID-19 pandemic.

4.2. The lowest recorded number of single-day COVID-19 hospitalizations was 548 on March 21, 2021.

4.3. The highest recorded number of single-day COVID-19 hospitalizations was 3,460 on November 30, 2020.

4.4. It is encouraging that the 785 COVID-19 hospitalizations on April 8 was the 77th lowest number of single-day hospitalizations recorded in the past 335 days!

4.5. It is discouraging that there were 692 of the total 2,191 statewide intensive care unit beds available on April 9, which might not be sufficient to care for all patients unless hospitals can (a) increase the number of ICU beds as needed or (b) send patients in need of care elsewhere.

4.6. It is encouraging that hospital staff shortages are being lessened because 60 percent of health care workers and first responders had been fully vaccinated as of January 27.

4.7. The 2,207 of the total 2,772 statewide ventilators available on April 9 were ample since COVID-19 treatments now include less invasive oxygen delivery methods and other effective treatments such as the steroid dexamethasone.

5. STATEWIDE COVID-19 CASES
NOTE: See the 12.2. New COVID-19 Cases list at the bottom of this web page.

5.1. The highest 10-day average of 6,857 new cases occurred on December 12.

5.2. It is disturbing that the 10-day average new cases number of 1,072 on April 9 equaled the 139th  highest 10-day average in the past 400 days.

5.3. It is disturbing that older unvaccinated Hoosiers have an ongoing great risk of infection from contact with younger Hoosiers because Hoosiers age 70 and older account for just 10.7 percent (or 74,491) of all the 696,175 positive COVID-19 cases as of April 9 while 621,684 Hoosiers under age 70 have been infected with COVID-19!

5.4. It is disturbing that about 17,771 Hoosiers who have tested positive for COVID-19 were currently infected and not yet recovered on April 9. This means that 0.26 percent of the total 6,754,953 Indiana population or 26 of every 10,000 Hoosiers was known to be currently infected and could infect other folks with the COVID-19 virus.

6. STATEWIDE POSITIVITY RATE

6.1. The State Health Commissioner has established a target positivity rate of 5.0 percent of new positive COVID-19 cases compared to the number of new tests.

6.2. The World Health Organization also recommends that 5.0 percent or less of tests should be positive two consecutive weeks before a community loosens restrictions on business openings.

6.3. It is encouraging that the 4.7 percent 7-day comparison of all positive test results to all tests processed reported on April 9 met the 5.0 percent target for the 53rd consecutive day!

7. STATEWIDE COVID-19 DEATHS
NOTE: See the 12.3. New COVID-19 Deaths list at the bottom of this web page.

7.1. The highest 10-day average new deaths number of 91 was on January 7.

7.2. It is encouraging that the 10-day average new deaths number of 9 on April 9 equaled the 18th lowest 10-day average in the past 390 days!

7.3. Hoosiers age 70 and older account for 77.8 percent (or 9,901) of all the 12,726 COVID-19 deaths as of April 9 while 2,825 Hoosiers under age 70 had died.

7.4. Hoosiers age 70 and older have a 13.3 percent mortality rate 9,901 had died of the 74,491 who had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 9.

7.5. Hoosiers under age 70 have a 0.5 percent mortality rate 2,825 had died of the 621,684 who had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 9.

7.6. It is alarming that the 13.3 percent mortality rate for Hoosiers age 70 and older is 27 times more than the 0.5 percent mortality rate of Hoosiers under age 70 as of April 9!

7.7. The conclusion that the COVID-19 virus is deadly for Hoosiers (a) with underlying health problems and/or (b) living or working in communal environments is emphasized by the fact that the latest reported number of total resident deaths on April 9 in Indiana long-term care facilities was 6,180 (which was 48.6 percent of all the 12,726 COVID-19 deaths).

7.8. The latest reported data on April 9 shows that residents age 70 and older account for 90.3 percent (or 5,581) of all the 6,180 COVID19 deaths in Indiana long-term care facilities, while 599 long-term care facility residents under age 70 have died.

7.9. Of all the 9,901 Hoosiers age 70 and older who have died form the COVID-19 virus as of April 9, 4,320 live outside long-term care facilities.

7.10. The breakdown of all the 12,726 COVID-19 deaths as of April 9 is as follows:
5,581 deaths of residents age 70 and older in long-term care facilities (43.9 percent)
4,320 deaths of Hoosiers age 70 and older outside long-term care facilities (33.9 percent)
2,226 deaths of Hoosiers under age 70 outside long-term care facilities (17.5 percent)
599 deaths of residents under age 70 in long-term care facilities (4.7 percent)
